You've noticed them: those small cut marks on the seams of your Elila bra. They're especially visible on the underbust seam where the cup meets the band. Many customers ask us about them. Some retailers have even flagged them as a defect.
They're not a defect. They're something much more important: they're the traffic lights and quality control managers of pattern making and bra production.
What Notches Actually Do
A notch is a triangular cut made in the fabric by the cutting room before it goes to the sewing team. At Elila, we call them "outties" because they extend outward from the fabric edge. They're cut this way for one specific reason: to make absolutely sure the sewing team can see them and use them.
We could have the cutting room make small slits—tiny cuts that are harder to spot. But that defeats the purpose. If the sewing team can't reliably see the notches, they have to guess where to align the pieces. They have to rush or hope they get it right. That's not fair to them, and it's not fair to you.
Instead, we use visible triangular notches. They're clear. They're hard to miss. They give the sewing team the information they need to do their best work—with confidence and precision. No guesswork. Just accurate alignment, every time.
1. They Tell Us Which Piece Goes Where
When you're building a bra, pieces have to go in the right place. A notch tells the factory worker: "This piece belongs at the center front" or "This piece goes to the back of the cup." Without them, two pieces that look similar could be sewn in the wrong position, and the customer would never get a proper fit.
Think of a puzzle: all the pieces might look roughly the same color, but each one has a specific spot. Notches are how we mark which spot is which.
2. They Show Where Pieces Should Match Together
The most critical function of a notch is to show exactly where two pattern pieces should line up.
When the notch on the cup piece matches the notch on the band piece, they align perfectly. No guesswork. The seam sits in the right place, supports your body correctly, and distributes pressure evenly. If a factory worker is sewing the cup to the band and the notches don't match, they'll know immediately: something is wrong.
If we trimmed off the notches, a factory could hide the fact that the pieces don't actually match. A poorly aligned seam would be invisible. The bra would feel uncomfortable, but you wouldn't see why.
3. They Mark the Pattern Centerline
Notches also point to important structural markers, the places where pattern pieces meet in the middle of the design.
For example, there's a notch that shows where the very top of the cup (at the center) meets the underbust seam. This tells us the cup is positioned correctly relative to the band. Another notch shows where the cup seam matches to the centerfront of the band, and another marks where it meets the back. These marks ensure the cup sits at the right depth and height on your body.
4. They Guide Folding and Strap Placement
Notches also tell the factory where to fold the fabric or where special details, like straps & slings, should be attached. A notch at a specific point might say: "Fold here" or "Attach the sling at this exact spot." This precision ensures that every size is made consistently, and every bra feels the same no matter when it's made.
Why Visible Notches Matter in Production
Here's where the real quality story comes in: notches only work if the sewing team can see them.
Many bra brands trim off notches after sewing to make the inside look cleaner. Some use tiny slits instead of visible triangular notches to save money on cutting. Both choices hide the quality control process.
We chose the opposite path. We use visible triangular notches because we respect our sewing team too much to ask them to guess. When a stitcher can see the notches clearly, they can align pieces accurately, with confidence, without rushing, without hoping they got it right. They can do their best work.
Think of notches as traffic lights on the factory floor. They tell workers exactly where to align each piece before they commit to the seam. It's a built-in quality checkpoint. But only if the sewing team can spot them reliably.
We could trim the notches away and pretend the interior looks neater. We could use tiny slits and let the sewing team sometimes miss them. We could say that's fine—catch errors later, send bras back for rework.
But that's not how we operate. We keep our notches visible and triangular because the sewing team deserves clear information, and you deserve a bra made with precision and confidence. No guesswork. No hidden corners. Just quality built into every step.
